The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) has announced restoration efforts at the newly renamed Falls Creek Conservation Area, emphasizing the preservation of natural, historical, and archaeological resources.
USFS Expands Protected Area
The San Juan National Forest (USFS) has finalized the acquisition of the 30-acre Zink parcel, adding to previous USFS conservation efforts like the 1992 Hidden Valley acquisition (a partnership with LPOSC and others).
USFS Addresses Recreational Impacts
Increased recreational use has prompted the USFS to implement restoration measures. The Columbine District is developing a sustainable trail system, restoring areas impacted by unauthorized trails, and establishing clear corridors.
USFS Maintains Vital Wetlands
The USFS actively manages the Falls Creek wetland complex, maintaining the historic F Steineger Ditch to ensure the health of this important habitat. Planned maintenance will address infrastructure and protect against vandalism.
Each spring since 2016, San Juan National Forest hydrologists clean out the ditch and frequently monitor water levels to protect aging infrastructure while flood irrigating the wetland. The wetland complex allows the Forest Service to put a recently acquired senior water right to beneficial use in addition to providing critical wildlife habitat.
